Protecting The 'Throne': How Jay-Z & Kanye Beat the Leaks ›

deadthehype:

A very well-written article by Steven J. Horowitz of Billboard.com. He gets an inside scoop on the process of making the album and the secrets of avoiding the premature leaks.

What Yeezy and Hov did is definitely a game changer and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of artists uses the same tactics.

This is fascinating:

1. They didn’t record in traditional studios, it was all makeshift setups.
2. No internet allowed whatsoever in the room when they were recording.
3. All music kept on an external harddrive that required fingerprints to open. The music was never kept on a laptop at any time. Someone slept with the hard drives so they didn’t fall into the wrong hands.
4. The album was only sent to Apple iTunes 2 days before the release online.
5. The pressing plants only got the album after the Apple release.

That’s how you beat the bootleggers in 2011
